Sarah Aldous

September 2024 Graduate Recruit

Introduction
Hello, I’m Sarah, and I joined Butterfly Data as a Data Consultant in September 2024. I’m excited to share my journey and accomplishments during my first three months here.

Starting My Role
As a Data Consultant, I was responsible for helping develop Butterflies' DCAF assessment, which will assess an organisation’s Data Capability, using a framework composed of three different levels of service . From day one, I focused on engaging with company marketing through joining the LinkedIn team as well as attending a conference. I also wanted to improve my programming skills, so I prioritised my SAS and Python training by completing several courses.

How easy was it to settle in/fit into company culture?

I feel the people at Butterfly Data have offered me a warm welcome, and really prioritised making me feel comfortable during my onboarding process. There have been structures in place to ensure I have got to know each member of the team individually, and co-work in different parts of the country. Butterfly prioritises their culture, and I feel that everyone that is part of the company shares a similar set of values that ensure the work place feels supportive, empowering and comfortable.

Key Achievements
I’ve been fortunate to achieve training certifications, and positive feedback from my contribution to projects. Here are some highlights:

  • DCAF project: Working closely with a skilled team in Butterfly, we have produced the foundations for an innovative data capability assessment that is evaluated in correspondence to a hierarchy style data capability pyramid. During this project I have learned a lot about the data maturity field through extensive discovery, as well as utilised my scale development skills to aid in the development of the DCAF product.

  • Programming software: I have broadened my coding skill set by learning how to use different types of programming software such as SAS Viya and Python.

  • Linked In engagement: I have helped the companies linked in page grow to over 1000 follows, as well as increase reach by aiding in consistent posting and engagement.

Challenges and Solutions
Transitioning into a new role comes with its challenges, including getting used to a professional working environment which has deadlines and structures that are new and different from a university course. I found the new environment quite overwhelming at first, however people have been reassuring and are happy to help you learn. To address this, I have been open about things I do not understand and need help with. I have found the support I have been given has built my confidence and helped me develop.

Learning and Development
These first three months have been a period of significant learning and growth. I’ve developed skills in communicating with colleagues and other organisations, as well as how to share and showcase the work I am producing. Key lessons include using new systems such as slack, outline and trello, and understanding how they are important in keeping the company standardised and organised. .

Looking Ahead
As I move forward, I am excited about starting new projects, and being able to use the new programming software I have learned. My goals include growing my programming skills and branching out into no projects. I am committed to helping the company grow, and promoting its amazing culture and social values.

Advice for New Joiners
Reflecting on my experience, I would advise new hires to say ‘yes’ to as many new opportunities as possible! The most valuable experiences I have had so far have been from offering to help out in other departments, and joining co-working days and events. Saying ‘yes’ leads to not only new experiences, but lots more opportunities and growth.

Conclusion
My first three months at Butterfly Data have been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and look forward to continuing to contribute to our team’s success. Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey.
